SUMMARY:Grounded: A Nature Walk Series - Walk #1
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first event in this FREE summer series connecting you with nature in Ottawa. Explore\, learn and create with us! \n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to experience a moment? From consciously experiencing nature through your five senses to physically capturing the moment itself\, this joint forest bathing and pinhole photography workshop offers an opportunity to explore your connection to the present moment. Participants will be guided through hand-on construction of their own pinhole cameras before embarking on a guided walk where we’ll explore the practice of Shinrin-yoku\, the Japanese art of immersing ourselves in nature through the senses. Come experience the restorative benefits of spending intentional time among trees and reconnect with the more-than-human world that surrounds us every day. After this walk\, participants will be encouraged to use their pinhole cameras to capture the experience through photographic means. \n\n\n\nPlease note: Participants are asked to bring their own small cardboard boxes (about the size that a cellphone comes in). Limited boxes will be available on site. In the case of technical difficulties\, a cyanotype workshop will be offered in place of pinhole photography. \n\n\n\nAbout your facilitators: \n\n\n\nEdie Olender (she/her) is an Ottawa based concert and event photographer. Growing up in a creative household\, she was given her first digital camera at the age of six. By age ten\, she started experimenting with film photography and has continued to pursue both digital and film throughout her university career. Though she spends her school days in a molecular biology laboratory\, this scientific background has given her an analytical eye for capturing detail and for experimenting with multimedia techniques ranging from cyanotypes to encaustic inkjet transfers. More broadly\, her photographic work focuses on capturing Ottawa nightlife and queer spaces\, highlighting feelings of community and identity.  \n\n\n\nDanielle Marquis (she/her) is a facilitator\, gardener\, and nature enthusiast with a passion for helping people reconnect to nature and themselves. Having spent many years studying and practicing yoga\, meditation\, and mindfulness practices\, Danielle creates experiences that invite participants to slow down\, cultivate presence\, and deepen their relationship with the natural world. In a culture that often centers productivity and perpetual growth\, Danielle is an advocate for rest and intentional living. Her approach blends reflection\, sensory awareness\, and a deeper appreciation for the living world around us. Danielle holds a postgraduate degree in Community Economic Development from Concordia University.
