SUMMARY:Queer Linguistics: Taking a Critical Eye to Butch/Femme Discourse in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Are masc and femme truly ‘queer’ labels? Join MA student Mar Pauls on November 4 for an interactive workshop on Queer Linguistics. This workshop draws on Mar’s master’s research\, where they merge queer theory and critical discourse analysis to explore the way that heteronormativity may be reproduced in queer women’s discourse. \n\n\n\nThis workshop explores heteronormativity in queer women’s spaces\, focusing on Canadian queer women’s discussion of gender expression-based subgroups (butch/femme). The workshop will feature an activity that examines online identity discourse. Participants will learn about ideologies of gender\, queer theory\, identity\, belonging\, and how critical discourse analysis can address issues that impact queer people. Mar will address the context and findings of their master’s research\, introduce their methods\, and allow workshop participants to test-drive critical discourse analysis to explore heteronormativity that may be present in online discourse. No prior experience in gender studies or discourse analysis is required. Participants will leave with an understanding of queer centered research at Carleton and the potential influence of heteronormativity on queer identities and belonging. \n\n\n\nMar Pauls is a master’s student in Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies at Carleton University. Their thesis is supervised by Dr. Jaffer Sheyholislami (SLaLS) and Dr. Amrita Hari (FIST). Their research merges queer theory and critical discourse analysis to examine the influence of heteronormativity on queer women’s identity and belonging. Mar is an equity focused student with experience in language and gender\, equitable assessment\, and language research. \n\n\n\nMar has presented their research at several conferences including an invited talk and keynote and holds the UManitoba Arts Study Body Council Most Inspiring LGBTQIA+ Student Award\, the ALDS Lynne Young Graduate Award\, and the Best Student Poster Award from the Western Interdisciplinary Student Symposium In Linguistics. \n\n\n\nIn addition to their academic work\, Mar has served as the President of the Society of Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies (SALaDS)\, and remains an active and loud advocate for 2SLGBTQIA+ students and youth in their hometown of Winnipeg and here in Ottawa. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is hosted by the Carleton Gender and Sexuality Resource Centre (GSRC). Visit the GSRC Linktree to keep up with the latest updates.

SUMMARY:Stories In Ink
DESCRIPTION:Experience Stories In Ink: Live Edition — a captivating fusion of art and performance that transforms the way stories are told. This intimate tattoo performance is something this city has never seen before\, join the multi-disciplinary madness of Lucille Giwa as they take us on a journey through time\, craft and culture. \n\n\n\nGrounded in the reclamation of the black body\, Lucille will tattoo three dynamic artists — Nyana\, Yanaminah\, and Aurel Pressat — while engaging them in intimate conversations that explore their artistry\, identity\, and the stories that shape them. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE GUESTS \n\n\n\nYanaminah Thullah\, Aurel Pressat\, and Nyana Ntwari are the three dynamic creatives whose practices intertwine art\, identity and diasporic experience. \n\n\n\nYanaminah Thullah is a Toronto-born multidisciplinary storyteller\, curator\, writer\, and public speaker of Sierra-Leonean and Liberian descent. Rooted in her lived experiences and a background in International Relations\, Thullah’s work explores world-building as a form of liberation. Her creative practice is dedicated to deconstructing systemic barriers\, demystifying migrant-diaspora relations\, and amplifying narratives of community resilience and transformation. \n\n\n\nAurel Pressat Irigukunze\, an award-winning Kenyan-born actor of Burundian descent\, has been performing on stage and screen since childhood. Raised in Ottawa\, Pressat is a proudly queer local  icon whose charisma and advocacy resonate from coast to coast and beyond. Equally at home on camera or in heels\, Aurel continues to expand the boundaries of storytelling\, blending performance\, visibility\, and unapologetic self-expression. \n\n\n\nNyana Ntwari\, based in Ottawa\, is a Burundian queer femme artist\, performer\, and devoted ‘life enjoyer’. Deeply inspired by the interplay between her Blackness and Queerness\, Ntwari is an active force in Ottawa’s Kiki Ballroom scene and Afro-queer party spaces. As a co-founder of The Touch Grass Kiki collective\, she merges artistic expression with community-building\, creating safer and more joyful spaces for queer Black and Afro-diasporic identities to thrive. \n\n\n\nTogether\, Thullah\, Pressat\, and Ntwari represent a growing wave of diasporic storytellers challenging conventions and reimagining what it means to create\, connect\, and celebrate identity across mediums and borders. Don’t miss this rare opportunity in our city to commune in knowledge sharing\, art and empowerment.
