SUMMARY:HIV/AIDS\, Harm Reduction\, and 2SLGBTQIA+ History
DESCRIPTION:In the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic\, communities took action where governments failed—creating harm reduction programs to prevent HIV transmission and care for one another. Many of those programs still exist today\, offering life-saving support amid the ongoing drug toxicity crisis. \n\n\n\nNow\, harm reduction services are under threat\, HIV rates are rising\, and politicians are scapegoating people who use drugs. These struggles are deeply connected. \n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, May 14 for a webinar with organizers from past and present. Together\, we’ll explore where these movements began\, what was achieved\, and why solidarity between communities is essential to defending health\, dignity\, and justice. \n\n\n\n🗓 May 14\, 2025🕐 1–2:30pm EST | 10–11:30am PST💻 Register through the link below.

SUMMARY:IndigiQueer Kinship Group
DESCRIPTION:Welcome! This is a new group created for the Indigenous\, Two-Spirit\, Queer community here in Ottawa. This is a super exciting opportunity and we hope many of you are able to join our group! For the first meeting\, we will be doing introductions\, talking about the nature of the group\, and do some painting and drawing while chatting! We will also have some snacks and drinks.  \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions please reach out at sabrina@kindspace.ca \n\n\n\nGroup Description: \n\n\n\nIndigiQueer Kinship Group is a peer support and social group for Two-Spirit and Queer Indigenous folk. Our group’s goal is to create a safe\, welcoming and culturally inclusive environment where you can meet others who share similar backgrounds and experiences. We understand the importance of having spaces where Indigenous culture is celebrated\, valued and respected. If you want to make new friends\, find support from peers\, or if you want to come and chill\, our group offers a space where you can be yourself without judgment!  \n\n\n\nThe IndigiQueer Kinship Group will run from 1-3 pm on the second Saturday of every month (with the exception of the first meeting).  \n\n\n\nNotes for Participants: \n\n\n\nThis group is open to anyone who identifies as 2SLGBTQIA+ and self-identifies as First Nation\, Inuit\, or Métis\, we want this space to be available for people with varying lived experiences. While we are open to those reclaiming or navigating their culture\, we will not tolerate any intentional false claims of Indigenous identity or pretendians. While we will not police identities at the IndigiQueer\, we expect you to come in good faith\, or you may be asked to leave. We are also open to participants inviting a non-indigenous family member\, partner\, spouse or kids\, as long as they honour what the space is intended for.  \n\n\n\nThis is a social and peer support group in a community center environment. This means no professional mental health\, psychology\, or therapy support is available during the group. As we are all going to be Indigenous and queer folk\, we recognize the many historical and current traumas that our communities have gone through. We also know that we cannot talk about our successes without acknowledging our pain and oppression. However\, we will ask that you try to refrain from bringing up any personal traumatic experiences during group discussions. When separate from the entire group\, talking amongst yourselves\, you will be able to discuss whatever you would like at your own discretion. This rule is to ensure that we do not re-trigger or cause secondary trauma to anyone participating in the group discussions. Talking about what we have gone through is so important\, but this is a space to relax\, and just be.  \n\n\n\nNote for Parents: \n\n\n\nThis group will allow you to bring your children if you do not have childcare options available. It is important to note that we will not be responsible for the entertainment or care for your children. We have toys and games available for them to use\, however it is your responsibility to watch them. If you are bringing your children\, please make sure to fill out this form again for them so we know how many people are attending.  \n\n\n\nAccessibility: \n\n\n\nIf you have any access needs please let us know!  \n\n\n\nAccessibility information can be found here: https://kindspace.ca/about/accessibility/ \n\n\n\nActivities: \n\n\n\nWe will have different activities each time we meet. It will most likely be crafts or games. But if you have any ideas of things or crafts you want to see included\, please do not hesitate to let us know! \n\n\n\nBio of Facilitators: \n\n\n\nHello! My name is Sabrina\, and I am 21 years old. I am an urban Inuk who has lived in Ottawa my entire life. When I was 4 years old I was adopted with my older sister into a primarily white family\, which has resulted in our disconnection from the Inuit language\, culture and community. In the past 5 years\, I have been slowly reconnecting with my culture and with the Indigenous people in the community. I live with FASD\, ADHD and anxiety. I love reading\, cooking and baking. I am a Carleton University student currently in my third year of the Bachelor’s of Social Work program\, with minors in Indigenous Studies\, and Criminology and Criminal Justice. With this group\, I hope to make new friends\, connections and learn more about my Inuit culture\, as well as other Indigenous cultures. I look forward to meeting you all\, and hope to have lots of fun in this group!!

SUMMARY:Vote First\, Cookie Second
DESCRIPTION:Vote First\, Cookie Second is back this Monday\, April 28 🍪 \n\n\n\nSame as last time (if you remember the provincial election)—we’re giving out free cookies to anyone who votes. Non-partisan and no strings attached\, just sugar-fueled civic engagement and a reminder that adults need treats too. 📣 \n\n\n\nThis time it’s federal\, and yeah\, we’re tired too. It’s easy to make excuses. But our most vulnerable community members are at risk\, and your voice MATTERS. Voting can be hard\, but it’s so\, so important—so we hope a little cookie helps. 👀 \n\n\n\nCome by the shop if you’re voting (or already voted!) and and grab your exclusive Election Day cookie – on us. \n\n\n\n📍 992 Wellington St. W📅 Monday\, April 28💖 No purchase required\, just participation \n\n\n\n🍪 Limited quantities\, while supplies last \n\n\n\nWe’re a queer and neurodivergent-owned business that believes in showing up\, speaking out\, and giving back- this is just one way we can do that (with frosting). 🤭

SUMMARY:Drown Out Hate
DESCRIPTION:“Billboard Chris” has announced a return to Ottawa to once again hold a transphobic protest outside the schools on Broadview Avenue. Last time this happened\, the community came out in great numbers to drown out the hate\, and Community Solidarity Ottawa is once again organizing a counterprotest starting at 12pm at the intersection of Broadview & Dovercourt. \n\n\n\nMake sure to keep in mind these important safety tips from the organizers: \n\n\n\n– Do not give interviews to far right media outlets or “independent journalists”– Don’t debate far-right trolls. Either ignore them or drown them out with chants and noise! Especially if they are filming or livestreaming and looking for content.– Do not film supporters without their permission. Do film the far right\, fake journalists\, and the police in order to protect yourself and your friends.– Protect your identity. Mask up\, and use signs\, flags\, umbrellas\, etc.\, to protect yourself from being photographed by far right activists or fake news outlets.– Keep yourself safe online; put your socials on high privacy settings to avoid doxxing and harassment after the event– Maintain situational awareness\, and watch each others’ backs– Try to arrive and leave as a group– Check the weather\, drive safely and dress appropriately! Give yourself plenty of time to arrive! \n\n\n\nIf you are available to help in any role (first aid\, crowd control\, etc.)\, please contact us at communitysolidarityottawa@gmail.com. We will be holding a briefing session on Thursday night for those interested in attending\, where we will go over how you can keep yourself as safe as possible while effectively confronting bigots.

SUMMARY:Criminalized Lives: HIV and Legal Violence
DESCRIPTION:Author Meets Readers | Criminalized Lives: HIV and Legal Violence \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\nCanada has been known as a hot spot for HIV criminalization where the act of not disclosing one’s HIV-positive status to sex partners has historically been regarded as a serious criminal offence. Criminalized Lives describes how this approach has disproportionately harmed the poor\, Black and Indigenous people\, gay men\, and women in Canada. In this book\, people who have been criminally accused of not disclosing their HIV-positive status\, detail the many complexities of disclosure\, and the violence that results from being criminalized.   Accompanied by portraits from artist Eric Kostiuk Williams\, the profiles examine whether the criminal legal system is really prepared to handle the nuances and ethical dilemmas faced everyday by people living with HIV. By offering personal stories of people who have faced criminalization first-hand\, Alexander McClelland questions common assumptions about HIV\, the role of punishment\, and the violence that results from the criminal legal system’s legacy of categorizing people as either victims or perpetrators.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Authors\n\n\n\nAlexander McClelland is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Criminology\, Carleton University. He is the author of Criminalized Lives: HIV and Legal Violence\, released in 2024\, from the Q+ Public Series at Rutgers University Press\, which includes illustrations from queer comic artist\, Eric Kostiuk Williams\, with a foreword from US-based HIV activist and movement leader\, Robert Suttle. The book examines the histories and experiences of people living with HIV in Canada who had been criminalized due to allegations of HIV non-disclosure\, and it also chronicles the vibrant and vocal social movement calling for justice\, and change\, under the slogan #HIVISNOTACRIME. \n\n\n\nEric Kostiuk Williams is a cartoonist and illustrator based in Toronto\, Canada. He has several comics publications\, including 2AM Eternal and Our Wretched Town Hall. \n\n\n\nAbout the Panelists\n\n\n\nLara Karaian is an Associate Professor in the Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Carleton University. Her research examines the intersections between sexuality\, technology\, representation\, affect\, and law. Her current SSHRC funded research\, titled “Sex/Crime in the Era of Immersive\, Interactive\, and Intelligent Technologies\,” examines the relationship between emerging sexual technologies and legal constructions of ‘sex crime’. Dr. Karaian serves on the editorial board of the journal Porn Studies. Her research has been published in an array of peer-reviewed legal\, sexuality\, and criminology journals and edited collections. Dr. Karaian is currently writing a sole-authored manuscript on deepfake pornography panics. \n\n\n\nRyan Conrad is an Adjunct Research Professor at the Feminist Institute of Social Transformation at Carleton University where he also teaches in the Human Rights & Social Justice program. Ryan is an artist\, and cultural studies scholar whose research\, teaching\, and cultural production interests in the study of sexuality include queer studies\, queer of colour critique\, affect theory\, archival practices\, film and media\, HIV/AIDS\, sex work\, migration\, and social movement history. Conrad’s current SSHRC funded research project titled Sex Worker Self-Authoring in the Canadian Women’s Movement Archive explores the holdings of the CWMA housed in the Archives and Special Collections at the University of Ottawa. The project will locate and animate written and visual materials produced by sex workers and the sex workers’ rights movement in Canada from 1977-1992.
