SUMMARY:Making Your Voice Heard: Using Mainstream Media for Queer Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:It’s becoming harder to get queer perspectives into mainstream media\, but media remains one of the best (free) ways of getting our perspectives out there. Join Queer Momentum’s executive director Fae Johnstone – one of Canada’s most frequent queer commentators – for an interactive session on how to meaningfully engage media in your advocacy. \n\n\n\nQueer Momentum’s Winter Webinars\n\n\n\nThrough our webinars\, we help power-up 2SLGBTQIA+ advocates and allies with training on effective advocacy\, movement-building and community organizing. These sessions are free\, and intended to help you – as an activist or ally – become a stronger advocate.  \n\n\n\nThis winter\, we’re bringing you five sessions designed and delivered by our team\, ranging from effective messaging to arts-based activism to undertaking culturally aware advocacy. We’re proud of these sessions\, and excited to share them with you. All sessions will be recorded and shared with registrants – so don’t hesitate to sign up even if you can’t make it during the time-slot.

SUMMARY:Transform Gender Collective (TGC) Monthly Meetings
DESCRIPTION:Transform Gender Collective (TGC) is a support and discussion group for transmasculine and masculine-of-center Black\, indigenous\, and people of color (BIPOC) to learn about transformative justice\, unlearn toxic gendered behaviors\, and imagine what masculinity could look like outside of the gender binary. \n\n\n\nDuring our virtual meetings\, we will dive deep into the framework of transformative justice (TJ) and how we can apply it to our everyday lives\, create a community of support for one another\, and share our personal stories of coming into our genders. Our ultimate goal is to move the group towards a closed community accountability space where we can practice robust transformative justice as we heal and grow in our masculinities together. \n\n\n\nTGC is open to any Black\, Indigenous\, and/or person of color (BIPOC) who identifies as transmasculine or masculine-of-center\, regardless of gender identity. \n\n\n\nWe ask that white-passing BIPOC reflect on their privilege and the way they are racialized. At TGC\, we discuss our gendered experiences as people that are racialized as Black or brown in the world. Please choose whether to attend our meetings based on these reflections. \n\n\n\nOur virtual monthly meetings are held over Zoom and take place on the last Wednesday of each month from 6:30-8PM EST. SUMMARY:Day With(out) Art
DESCRIPTION:📅 Opening Talk & Screening: Monday\, December 1st\, 2025 | 6 – 8 PM📅Looping Screening: December 2 – 4\, 2025 | 10 AM – 5 PM📍 DARC’s Microcinema | 67 Nicholas St \n\n\n\nDARC and @qu.art.ottawa are proud to partner with @visual_aids for Day With(out) Art 2025 by presenting Meet Us Where We’re At\, a program of six videos that forefront the experiences of drug users and harm reduction practices as they intersect with the ongoing HIV crisis. The program features new work by Camilo Tapia Flores\, Camila Flores-Fernández\, Hoàng Thái Anh\, Kenneth Idongesit Usoro\, José Luis Cortés\, and Gustavo Vinagre & Vinicius Couto.A day of mourning and action that uses art to respond to the ongoing HIV and AIDS crisis\, Day With(out) Art encourages museums\, universities\, and art institutions to present related programming on or around December 1\, World AIDS Day. Because AIDS is not over! \n\n\n\nCommissioned videos by artists in Puerto Rico\, Brazil\, Nigeria\, Germany\, and Vietnam journey across a range of spaces\, revealing the complexity of drug use. Several videos document the visible world of drugs—a harm reduction program in a Berlin park\, a night out during Rio’s Carnival—while others reveal private\, often hidden spaces where safety is found: bedrooms\, underground clinics\, and moments of connection between lovers. \n\n\n\nMeet Us Where We’re At speaks not only to the variety of physical locations where contemporary harm reduction is practiced\, but also to a broader shift: centering drug users as authors of their own experiences. Rooted in the philosophy of meeting people at their personal reality without judgment\, the program affirms the full context of drug use—its pleasures\, its risks\, and its role in how people survive\, care\, and connect. \n\n\n\nHarm reduction has long been central to the AIDS movement through practices like needle exchange and safe injection sites\, and people who use drugs have been affected by HIV since the earliest days of the epidemic. This program brings their perspectives to the forefront\, amplifying the voices of drug users as storytellers\, cultural producers\, and essential participants in the global response to HIV. \n\n\n\nAs this is a program centering harm reduction\, it will contain depictions of sexual activity and drug use. \n\n\n\nVisual AIDS is a New York-based non-profit that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue\, supporting HIV+ artists\, and preserving a legacy\, because AIDS is not over. \n\n\n\nKeynote Speaker Ahmed Muslimani \n\n\n\nAhmed Muslimani is a community health leader\, actor\, and advocate whose work brings together harm reduction\, HIV and sexual health\, and newcomer support. As Director of Community Programs at MAX Ottawa\, they support initiatives that strengthen access to culturally responsive care for queer\, trans\, and non-binary communities across Ottawa. Ahmed has worked closely with LGBTQ+ refugees and newcomers\, supporting them as they navigate settlement\, safety\, and the early stages of community-building. Their background as a performer shapes their belief in storytelling as a practice that builds connection and helps people make sense of their experiences. Ahmed also serves on the Board of Directors of the Ontario HIV Treatment Network. They are committed to approaches rooted in dignity\, lived experience\, and the everyday ways people care for one another. \n\n\n\nSpecial thanks to MAX Ottawa for their support!
