SUMMARY:Ottawa Design Club #0017 - Flip the Script
DESCRIPTION:When things don’t go as planned\, do you see a setback or an opportunity? Creativity often thrives when things get messy\, surprising\, or even a bit frustrating. The trick is knowing how to turn those tricky moments into your greatest strengths. \n\n\n\nJoin us for Flip the Script\, an evening where our speakers will share real stories about flipping challenges into creative wins. You’ll hear about unexpected detours\, bold pivots\, and how turning situations on their head led to surprising breakthroughs. They’ll show you that even when you’re backed into a corner\, there’s always another angle to explore. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re navigating creative roadblocks\, pivoting your approach\, or just curious about turning setbacks into comebacks\, this night will inspire you to see your creative journey differently. Because sometimes the best move is to flip the script. \n\n\n\nPanelists: \n\n\n\n\nLuke Norrad: a graphic designer based in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, with a focus on custom lettering and typography. A graduate of NSCAD University\, he opened his own studio in 2013\, working with clients across Canada and internationally. Known for his vintage-inspired approach and sharp attention to detail\, Luke has built a reputation as a branding specialist for restaurants\, clothing brands\, museums\, and more.\n\n\n\nCara Tierney: a trans*\, white settler of Scottish\, Irish\, and Italian descent. A creative and community builder\, their work blends art and education with a focus on social change. Now a professor at the University of Ottawa\, Tierney has taught at Algonquin College and the National Gallery of Canada. Since 2004\, they’ve led arts and anti-oppression workshops on unceded Algonquin land\, using creativity to build community and support justice-driven work.\n\n\n\nEric Chan\, aka eepmon\,: a digital artist blending code and creativity. He has worked with Canada Goose\, Marvel\, and cultural institutions worldwide. His projects\, from CityLights NFTs to data-driven paintings\, merge technology with storytelling. In 2025 he was named Library and Archives Canada’s first creator in residence. He has represented Canada on global trade missions\, served on the Canadian Museums Association board\, and received honours like the LAC Scholar Award and Banff Forum ABJ Fellowship.

SUMMARY:The Activate Mini Kiki Ball
DESCRIPTION:Queer people around the world know all too well what it feels like to live in the shadows. We’re told we’re not enough\, and that the best we can expect is a world that’s ashamed of us. \n\n\n\nBut it only takes one moment to ACTIVATE your power and release it into the world. This is that moment… \n\n\n\nThink of this ball as a retelling of a story we all know too well. The journey of an oftentimes lonely queer kid discovering their power\, building true community around them\, and falling in love with themselves all over again. \n\n\n\nThis is a story of hope. A story of resilience. A story of creativity. And a chance to finally be ourselves\, surrounded by a community that celebrates us\, even in a world that’s tried to make us feel unworthy.
