SUMMARY:Ottawa International Writers Festival
DESCRIPTION:The second half of the Ottawa International Writers Festival Spring Edition is back this week! Here at MAX\, we’re especially interested in Baldwin\, Styron\, and Me. \n\n\n\nAn unlikely literary friendship from the past sheds light on the radicalization of public debate around identity\, race\, and censorship. Peter Schneider sits down with author Mélikah Abdelmoumen\, and translator Catherine Khordoc for a discussion on their acclaimed book\, Baldwin\, Styron\, and Me . \n\n\n\nIn 1961\, James Baldwin spent several months in William Styron’s guest house. The two wrote during the day\, then spent evenings confiding in each other and talking about race in America. During one of those conversations\, Baldwin is said to have convinced his friend to write\, in first person\, the story of the 1831 slave rebellion led by Nat Turner. The Confessions of Nat Turner was published to critical acclaim\, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 1968\, and also creating outrage in part of the African American community. \n\n\n\nDecades later\, the controversy around cultural appropriation\, identity\, and the rights and responsibilities of the writer still resonates. In Baldwin\, Styron\, and Me\, Mélikah Abdelmoumen considers the writers’ surprising yet vital friendship from her standpoint as a racialized woman torn by the often unidimensional versions of her identity put forth by today’s politics and media. Considering questions of identity\, race\, equity\, and the often contentious public debates about these topics\, Abdelmoumen works to create a space where the answers are found by first learning how to listen—even in disagreement. \n\n\n\nGet tickets to this event through the link below! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCheck out the full lineup here!

SUMMARY:HIV/AIDS\, Harm Reduction\, and 2SLGBTQIA+ History
DESCRIPTION:In the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic\, communities took action where governments failed—creating harm reduction programs to prevent HIV transmission and care for one another. Many of those programs still exist today\, offering life-saving support amid the ongoing drug toxicity crisis. \n\n\n\nNow\, harm reduction services are under threat\, HIV rates are rising\, and politicians are scapegoating people who use drugs. These struggles are deeply connected. \n\n\n\nJoin us on Wednesday\, May 14 for a webinar with organizers from past and present. Together\, we’ll explore where these movements began\, what was achieved\, and why solidarity between communities is essential to defending health\, dignity\, and justice. \n\n\n\n🗓 May 14\, 2025🕐 1–2:30pm EST | 10–11:30am PST💻 Register through the link below.

SUMMARY:Transformations Ottawa: Exploring LGBTQ2S+ Stories (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an unforgettable evening of personal storytelling that celebrates the power of change\, identity\, and community. Transformations Ottawa brings together local LGBTQ2S+ storytellers to share pivotal moments of transformation in their lives—stories of becoming\, belonging\, and bold self-discovery. \n\n\n\nHosted by the incomparable Jeffrey Canton (he/him)\, this event promises heart\, humour\, and insight. Over the past three decades\, Jeffrey has captivated audiences with original stories rooted in Toronto’s layered histories\, his Jewish heritage\, and his deeply personal queerstory—interwoven with gay show tunes and a touch of soft-shoe. A founding member of Queers in Your Ears\, Jeffrey has shared his work across Canada and internationally\, from Harbourfront Centre to Arirang Nights of Storytelling in Korea. He is a passionate storytelling coach\, a celebrated teacher of “Transformations” with Storytelling Toronto\, and the 2018 recipient of the Alice Kane Award. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a member of the LGBTQ2S+ community or an ally\, Transformations Ottawa offers a space to listen\, connect\, and reflect on the stories that shape us.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Queering My Story
DESCRIPTION:About the Workshop:Are you interested in learning how to turn a memory or anecdote into a more substantial story about your life as a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community or an 2SLGBTQIA+ ally? We often share these “kitchen table” moments about our daily experiences as 2SLGBTQIA+ without realizing their potential as stories. This workshop offers you ways to transform these “moments of being” into a compelling work of art. By focusing on one or more meaningful life experiences\, you’ll learn to shape a piece that highlights the importance of these moments from your life as 2SLGBTQIA+ or as an ally and will connect deeply with listeners. \n\n\n\nAbout The Facilitator:Jeffrey Canton has been telling personal stories for nearly 30 years as well as teaching how queer storytellers can shape stories about their lives and experiences into performance pieces that have the depth and power they deserve. Whether you’re interested in telling a story about your connection to a key event in 2SLGBTQIA+ history\, your coming out along the spectrum of queer identity\, a transformative moment in your queerness or a slice of your life as 2SLGBTQIA+\, Jeffrey will share different ways that you can explore to make your story come alive.
