SUMMARY:Queer Linguistics: Taking a Critical Eye to Butch/Femme Discourse in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Are masc and femme truly ‘queer’ labels? Join MA student Mar Pauls on November 4 for an interactive workshop on Queer Linguistics. This workshop draws on Mar’s master’s research\, where they merge queer theory and critical discourse analysis to explore the way that heteronormativity may be reproduced in queer women’s discourse. \n\n\n\nThis workshop explores heteronormativity in queer women’s spaces\, focusing on Canadian queer women’s discussion of gender expression-based subgroups (butch/femme). The workshop will feature an activity that examines online identity discourse. Participants will learn about ideologies of gender\, queer theory\, identity\, belonging\, and how critical discourse analysis can address issues that impact queer people. Mar will address the context and findings of their master’s research\, introduce their methods\, and allow workshop participants to test-drive critical discourse analysis to explore heteronormativity that may be present in online discourse. No prior experience in gender studies or discourse analysis is required. Participants will leave with an understanding of queer centered research at Carleton and the potential influence of heteronormativity on queer identities and belonging. \n\n\n\nMar Pauls is a master’s student in Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies at Carleton University. Their thesis is supervised by Dr. Jaffer Sheyholislami (SLaLS) and Dr. Amrita Hari (FIST). Their research merges queer theory and critical discourse analysis to examine the influence of heteronormativity on queer women’s identity and belonging. Mar is an equity focused student with experience in language and gender\, equitable assessment\, and language research. \n\n\n\nMar has presented their research at several conferences including an invited talk and keynote and holds the UManitoba Arts Study Body Council Most Inspiring LGBTQIA+ Student Award\, the ALDS Lynne Young Graduate Award\, and the Best Student Poster Award from the Western Interdisciplinary Student Symposium In Linguistics. \n\n\n\nIn addition to their academic work\, Mar has served as the President of the Society of Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies (SALaDS)\, and remains an active and loud advocate for 2SLGBTQIA+ students and youth in their hometown of Winnipeg and here in Ottawa. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is hosted by the Carleton Gender and Sexuality Resource Centre (GSRC). DESCRIPTION:The Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Department of English Language and Literature invite you to join us for the 2025-2026 Munro Beattie Lecture\, “And Then This One Time: Sweet Stories for Hard Times”. Because sometimes we all just need a good crylaugh. Join writer and storyteller Ivan Coyote for a round of storytelling to call upon the joy in our queer lives and celebrate the strength and bravery it takes to live real life as a trans person right now. Bring your best hankie. \n\n\n\nIt will take place at 7pm on October 15 at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre. No registration is required. \n\n\n\nIvan Coyote is a writer and storyteller. Born and raised in Whitehorse\, Yukon\, they are the author of thirteen books\, the creator of four films\, six stage shows\, and three albums that combine storytelling with music. Coyote’s books have won the ReLit Award\, been named a Stonewall Honour Book\, been longlisted for Canada Reads\, and been shortlisted for the Hilary Weston Prize for non-fiction and the Governor General’s award for non-fiction twice. In 2017 Ivan was given an honorary Doctor of Laws from Simon Fraser University\, and in 2023 they received the first Honorary Doctor of Arts ever bestowed on anyone by Yukon University. They have toured public schools solo around the world for 20 years now\, using the power of a personal story to fight bullying and make schools safer for students\, staff and parents. Ivan has spent more than 30 years on the road as an international touring storyteller and musician. Coyote’s stories grapple with the complex and intensely personal topics of gender identity\, family\, class\, and queer liberation\, but always with a generous heart\, and a quick wit. Ivan’s stories manage to handle both the hilarious and the heartbreaking with reverence and compassion\, and remind us all of our own fallible and imperfect humanity\, while at the same time inspiring us to change the world. Ivan’s 13th book\, Care Of\, was released in June 2021 by McClelland and Stewart.

SUMMARY:Love In A Dangerous Time
DESCRIPTION:This pop‐up exhibit by the Canadian Museum for Human Rights speaks to decades of human rights violations against 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians who wanted to serve their country and the brave activists who fought back. It is designed to educate and inspire Canadians to help create a future in which the rights of all 2SLGBTQI+ people are respected. \n\n\n\nFrom the 1950s to the 1990s\, the Government of Canada investigated\, harassed and expelled 2SLGBTQI+ members of the Canadian Armed Forces\, RCMP and federal public service during what came to be known as “the Purge.” Thousands of careers and lives were destroyed through this sweeping national policy\, which came to be known as the LGBT Purge. But 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians led political and legal campaigns to change the policy and ensure protection under Canadian human rights law. \n\n\n\nIn 2016\, Purge survivors launched a class action suit that resulted in a historic settlement in 2018. That large settlement established the LGBT Purge Fund\, which worked with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights to develop Love in a Dangerous Time. The aim is to raise awareness of this little‐known history and to inspire new generations to rise to today’s challenges. This travelling exhibit complements the Museum’s much larger exhibition\, Love in a Dangerous Time: Canada’s LGBT Purge\, which is open in Winnipeg until early 2026. \n\n\n\nWe invite you to explore some of the survivors’ compelling — yet harrowing — stories from July 14 to October 3\, 2025. DESCRIPTION:Did you know that folks have been running workshops at The Grove since we launched in 2024? The Grove Studio is a queer-owned community creative hub in Ottawa that centers joy through art and learning. We believe in growing collaboratively\, which is why we are inviting folks who have skills to share to be a part of our community! \n\n\n\nIf you are someone who has a skill or craft that you would like to share\, but didn’t know how to go about it\, or want to do it in a supportive environment\, this event is for you! \n\n\n\nThis event will: \n\n\n\n\nIntroduce you to The Grove from an event organizer or facilitator’s perspective\n\n\n\nShare experiences running events at The Grove\, and what folks are interested in seeing more of\n\n\n\nCollaboratively generate topics for teach-ins\, skill shares\, and workshops\n\n\n\nWorkshop your idea into a ready-to-launch event\n\n\n\nTalk through what it’s like to run an event or workshop at The Grove\n\n\n\nAnswer your questions about event facilitation from an accessibility and care-focused perspective\n\n\n\n\nAll you need is to have a skill or craft that you feel confident in sharing\, whether it’s a hobby or something more. \n\n\n\nTwo identical sessions will be run: \n\n\n\n\nAfternoon session – doors at 1:30pm\, event from 2-4pm\n\n\n\nEvening session – doors at 5pm\, event from 5:30-7:30pm\n\n\n\n\nThis is a masked event (KN95 or more). 2 air filters will be on with central air conditioning. \n\n\n\nSee our FAQ about parking and other info about the space.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Elder Queer (2SLGBTQIA+) Storytelling with Mary Ellen MacLean \n\n\n\nBack by popular demand\, this summer session is open to folks who have never written a story and to those who have. If you have attended one of Mary Ellen’s workshops before\, you are welcome to come back and develop your storytelling skills. Mary Ellen has over 30 years of experience creating work for the stage and collaborating with people of all ages and experience. \n\n\n\nDuring this weeklong workshop the group will meet daily with Mary Ellen to learn some tools/skills in the art of creating a story for the stage and how to perform/tell them. Stories can be serious or comic or a blend of both. Participants may use movement\, puppets\, music – however you want to tell your story\, all are welcome! \n\n\n\nThis workshop offers an opportunity to gather\, deepen your community connections\, and create stories with the support of each other and Mary Ellen’s guidance. The focus is on having FUN\, learning some new skills\, and connecting with each other. \n\n\n\nFamily and friends are invited to the final session to hear the participant’s stories.
