DESCRIPTION:The Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Department of English Language and Literature invite you to join us for the 2025-2026 Munro Beattie Lecture\, “And Then This One Time: Sweet Stories for Hard Times”. Because sometimes we all just need a good crylaugh. Join writer and storyteller Ivan Coyote for a round of storytelling to call upon the joy in our queer lives and celebrate the strength and bravery it takes to live real life as a trans person right now. Bring your best hankie. \n\n\n\nIt will take place at 7pm on October 15 at the Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre. No registration is required. \n\n\n\nIvan Coyote is a writer and storyteller. Born and raised in Whitehorse\, Yukon\, they are the author of thirteen books\, the creator of four films\, six stage shows\, and three albums that combine storytelling with music. Coyote’s books have won the ReLit Award\, been named a Stonewall Honour Book\, been longlisted for Canada Reads\, and been shortlisted for the Hilary Weston Prize for non-fiction and the Governor General’s award for non-fiction twice. In 2017 Ivan was given an honorary Doctor of Laws from Simon Fraser University\, and in 2023 they received the first Honorary Doctor of Arts ever bestowed on anyone by Yukon University. They have toured public schools solo around the world for 20 years now\, using the power of a personal story to fight bullying and make schools safer for students\, staff and parents. Ivan has spent more than 30 years on the road as an international touring storyteller and musician. Coyote’s stories grapple with the complex and intensely personal topics of gender identity\, family\, class\, and queer liberation\, but always with a generous heart\, and a quick wit. Ivan’s stories manage to handle both the hilarious and the heartbreaking with reverence and compassion\, and remind us all of our own fallible and imperfect humanity\, while at the same time inspiring us to change the world. Ivan’s 13th book\, Care Of\, was released in June 2021 by McClelland and Stewart.

SUMMARY:Love In A Dangerous Time
DESCRIPTION:This pop‐up exhibit by the Canadian Museum for Human Rights speaks to decades of human rights violations against 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians who wanted to serve their country and the brave activists who fought back. It is designed to educate and inspire Canadians to help create a future in which the rights of all 2SLGBTQI+ people are respected. \n\n\n\nFrom the 1950s to the 1990s\, the Government of Canada investigated\, harassed and expelled 2SLGBTQI+ members of the Canadian Armed Forces\, RCMP and federal public service during what came to be known as “the Purge.” Thousands of careers and lives were destroyed through this sweeping national policy\, which came to be known as the LGBT Purge. But 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians led political and legal campaigns to change the policy and ensure protection under Canadian human rights law. \n\n\n\nIn 2016\, Purge survivors launched a class action suit that resulted in a historic settlement in 2018. That large settlement established the LGBT Purge Fund\, which worked with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights to develop Love in a Dangerous Time. The aim is to raise awareness of this little‐known history and to inspire new generations to rise to today’s challenges. This travelling exhibit complements the Museum’s much larger exhibition\, Love in a Dangerous Time: Canada’s LGBT Purge\, which is open in Winnipeg until early 2026. \n\n\n\nWe invite you to explore some of the survivors’ compelling — yet harrowing — stories from July 14 to October 3\, 2025. She has been working as a kink provider since 2021 and began offering kink and consent workshops in 2024.  She enjoys indulging in the art of negotiation and co-creating ritualistic scenes and kinky dynamics that facilitate growth and change through somatic experiences. Miss Red delights in nerding out about communication and having long conversations that deepen mutual understandings of the self\, desire\, and relationships.

Or maybe you know exactly what you need to feel comfortable\, but play feels rigid or uninspired. Join this two-part play lab with a certified mental health & relationship counsellor to explore the benefits of kink\, power play and fetish in your relationships. \n\n\n\nYou’ll be supported to explore… \n\n\n\n\nWhy kink feels so good\, based on how your brain learns and communicates\n\n\n\nFeel the difference between feeling unsafe and feelings of discomfort from avoidance\, overstimulation\, and dissociation \n\n\n\nConnect your unique access needs to roles and activities in BDSM \n\n\n\nCreate scenes and aftercare plans for collaborative connection \n\n\n\n\nIn the first part you will explore challenges and support needs. You don’t need to be in an ongoing relational dynamic to attend\, all that’s required is curiosity to understand yourself and other people.  \n\n\n\nDay 1: \n\n\n\n\nAfter settling in we name common challenges in kinky play and intimacy for neurodivergent folks.\n\n\n\nThis channels into support needs these challenges may be pointing towards.\n\n\n\nWe play with the difference between feeling unsafe and feeling uncomfortable in relationship\, and bring curiosity to discomfort. \n\n\n\nThere will be a bit of homework to take with you so you’re prepared well for the practical part. \n\n\n\n\nDay 2: \n\n\n\n\nConnect support needs to tools including kinky behaviours and activities \n\n\n\nPlan out a scene including negotiation and aftercare for everyone involved \n\n\n\n\nNote: This is not a 101 intro to BDSM\, so prior knowledge of basic kink negotiation\, safety and consent are expected before joining. \n\n\n\nTickets are sold per person and are provide access to the event for both Friday and Saturday as this is a two day workshop. \n\n\n\nTickets are available on a sliding scale to promote inclusivity and accessibility. You don’t need to be in an ongoing relational dynamic to attend\, all that’s required is curiosity to understand yourself and other people.  \n\n\n\nDay 1: \n\n\n\n\nAfter settling in we name common challenges in kinky play and intimacy for neurodivergent folks.\n\n\n\nThis channels into support needs these challenges may be pointing towards.\n\n\n\nWe play with the difference between feeling unsafe and feeling uncomfortable in relationship\, and bring curiosity to discomfort. \n\n\n\nThere will be a bit of homework to take with you so you’re prepared well for the practical part. \n\n\n\n\nDay 2: \n\n\n\n\nConnect support needs to tools including kinky behaviours and activities \n\n\n\nPlan out a scene including negotiation and aftercare for everyone involved \n\n\n\n\nNote: This is not a 101 intro to BDSM\, so prior knowledge of basic kink negotiation\, safety and consent are expected before joining. \n\n\n\nTickets are sold per person and are provide access to the event for both Friday and Saturday as this is a two day workshop. \n\n\n\nTickets are available on a sliding scale to promote inclusivity and accessibility. Please choose the ticket price that makes this event accessible to you. All ticket types provide the same access to the event. \n\n\n\nThis workshop does not require a membership. They integrate somatic techniques\, drama therapy\, sex therapy\, and DBT using a feminist trauma-informed body-based approach. They have been learning and teaching in kink communities since 2013 in London UK\, Melbourne Australia\, Toronto\, and Montreal. DESCRIPTION:Looking for a fun\, queer chat with people your age? Want to just hang out\, eat some snacks and meet new friends? Are you interested in having some discussions about sexuality\, identity\, homophobia and your personal experience? YSB is proud to offer Spectrum\, a program for 2SLGBTQ+ youth in Ottawa! \n\n\n\nSpectrum meets every Monday from 5-7 p.m. upstairs at our 147 Besserer St location. \n\n\n\nWe provide workshops\, discussion groups\, and art collaborations\, as well as counselling services\, peer mentoring\, and primary care resources. \n\n\n\nSpectrum can help with challenges like depression\, anxiety and suicide while also offering practical support to navigate the mental health\, housing and educational systems. \n\n\n\nSpectrum is also a safe space for youth to: \n\n\n\n\nMeet new people\n\n\n\nEngage in workshops and discussions\n\n\n\nAccess services like showers\, laundry\, computers\, telephones\n\n\n\nGet referrals\n\n\n\nAccess trained counsellors and peer mentors if youth need to talk\n\n\n\nJust hang out!\n\n\n\n\nActivities include: \n\n\n\n\nAn introduction to our space and expectations\n\n\n\nA queer current events discussion\n\n\n\nActivities\n\n\n\nAccess to snack during group\, showers\, laundry\, harm reduction supplies\, telephone\, internet\n\n\n\nAccess to crisis counsellors from YSB and/or our in-house counsellor from Centretown Community Health Centre\n\n\n\nA relaxed space where youth can be out and proud!\n\n\n\n\nContact: Aidan FritzEmail: afritz@ysb.ca

Come through and get behind the decks in a space where Black & Queer youth are learning\, playing\, and building from the ground up 💽 \n\n\n\nWe’re hosting an intro-level DJ workshop on Sunday\, August 10\, 2025 from 1PM-6PM. This time\, we have a special guest faciliatator DJ Del Pilar (@djdelpilar) holding it down! Co-founder of Homophono\, a queer dance party in Ottawa\, and facilitator of “In the Mix” Community DJ Days. Come through to the The Grove\, located at 18 Louisa St\, Unit 280 \n\n\n\n💻 No laptop? No problem \n\n\n\n🧠 No experience? We got you \n\n\n\n🎧 All gear provided. Just bring your curiosity \n\n\n\n😷 Masks Required!! *this special edition of DJ Basics is masked! \n\n\n\nYour Hosts: \n\n\n\n\nDJ Del Pilar ₊˚⊹\n\n\n\nDJ Celestial\n\n\n\nDJ Nebula\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop covers all things DJ Basics\, including a brief history of the craft\, software & hardware options\, mixing techniques and 1-on-1 support anyone beginning or along in their DJ journey. All levels are welcome and no previous experience is needed. You’ll have plenty of time to practice on the equipment\, which includes multiple DDJ-REV 1s and a DJControl Inpulse 500. Our facilitators will also be sharing some tips and their own personal mixing process with participants! \n\n\n\nLunch is included with vegan and gluten-free options available! \n\n\n\nTickets for this workshop are available by donation (pay what you can)\, with a suggested donation of $25. Our collective has since evolved into a safe and playful space of belonging\, experimentation and healing for Black and Black Queer youth (aged 18-30) in Ottawa\, offering resources\, hangout spaces\, connection and knowledge sharing opportunities. DESCRIPTION:Ready to take your beach volleyball skills to the next level? Join us for our Beach Skills and Drills Program led by James Battiston\, former professional volleyball player and member of the Canadian Beach National Team. James has coached for several years with the Mavericks Volleyball Club as well as 15+ years at Madawaska Volleyball Camp.   \n\n\n\nWhether you’re new to beach volleyball or a seasoned player\, we have something for you!  Join us at the RA Centre on Saturday mornings where James will bring his expert guidance to teach you fundamentals or take you to the next level with specific skills.  \n\n\n\nThis is an all-encompassing session that looks at strategies for getting your opponents to do what you want them to do. We will work on creating a serve/defensive strategy in the 2-on-2 beach game that funnels the defense to work with your strengths. On serve receive\, we will work on creating the best situation for a successful side out. For this session\, participants are expected to have basic ball control (being able to forearm or hand pass a ball to a target) to allow for meaningful rallies.
