SUMMARY:Vote First\, Cookie Second
DESCRIPTION:Vote First\, Cookie Second is back this Monday\, April 28 🍪 \n\n\n\nSame as last time (if you remember the provincial election)—we’re giving out free cookies to anyone who votes. Non-partisan and no strings attached\, just sugar-fueled civic engagement and a reminder that adults need treats too. 📣 \n\n\n\nThis time it’s federal\, and yeah\, we’re tired too. It’s easy to make excuses. But our most vulnerable community members are at risk\, and your voice MATTERS. Voting can be hard\, but it’s so\, so important—so we hope a little cookie helps. 👀 \n\n\n\nCome by the shop if you’re voting (or already voted!) and and grab your exclusive Election Day cookie – on us. \n\n\n\n📍 992 Wellington St. W📅 Monday\, April 28💖 No purchase required\, just participation \n\n\n\n🍪 Limited quantities\, while supplies last \n\n\n\nWe’re a queer and neurodivergent-owned business that believes in showing up\, speaking out\, and giving back- this is just one way we can do that (with frosting). 🤭

If the weather is nice we will stop for a hangout in the Arboretum\, if not\, there will be an optional hang at the Second Cup on Laurier. \n\n\n\nPlease bring some bike lights for this ride as it gets dark early. If you don’t have any\, we might have some extra for you! \n\n\n\nThis ride will be 12km\, about 50 minutes\, at a chill pace where no one is left behind! \n\n\n\nAccessibility: \n\n\n\nThis path is 100% on bike paths\, with a potential on road detour for a few minutes due to construction. There will be a QBC ride support to keep everyone together and safe during this detour and also the whole ride. \n\n\n\nWe will be crossing the locks near Carleton (pedestrian bridge with low railing) which could trigger some height phobias if this is a problem for you. Bikes will need to cross as well\, QBC ride support will be there to give you a hand. \n\n\n\nBring your water\, helmet\, bike lights\, and layers. Can’t wait to start the 4th QBC season with you!

SUMMARY:Ottawa International Writers Festival
DESCRIPTION:Here’s what we have our eyes on! \n\n\n\nBlack Lives\, Policing\, and Safety for All\n\n\n\nWith Sandy Hudson\, hosted by Erika Shaker \n\n\n\nSaturday\, May 3 – 5:30PM \n\n\n\nJoin Sandy Hudson\, multidisciplinary creator\, writer and activist\, and the founder of Black Lives Matter Canada\, for a fiercely argued case for defunding the police. \n\n\n\nIn  Defund: Black Lives\, Policing\, and Safety for All \, she elucidates what defunding the police actually means and why it matters\, by exploring today’s criminal landscape and the patterns and structures that result in safer\, well-resourced communities.  \n\n\n\nHudson explores the origins of commonly held ideas about police and safety to show how police-related social policies are based more on a sensationalized idea of safety than on outcomes and data. She examines the destructive effects of policing on scores of people\, arguing that investment in community resources and infrastructure rather than law enforcement is the key to making us safer. \n\n\n\nGet Tickets! \n\n\n\nInheritance\n\n\n\nWith Otoniya J. Okot Bitek and Iryn Tushabe\, hosted by Suyi Davies Okungbowa \n\n\n\nSaturday\, May 3 – 7:00PM \n\n\n\nJoin us for a taste of two of the year’s most acclaimed debut Canadian novels\, celebrated stories set in Uganda\, and a conversation on the ways we are shaped by–and in opposition to–our histories and cultures. \n\n\n\nWe\, the Kindling is the acclaimed debut from Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize-winner Otoniya J. Okot Bitek and is centred around the unforgettable voices of schoolgirls in Uganda captured by the Lord’s Resistance Army in the 1990s. Those who survive bear the physical and psychological weight of these experiences—often within communities that wish only to forget or ignore them. \n\n\n\nEverything Is Fine Here \, the debut from Journey Prize-winner Iryn Tushabe is a coming of age story set in Uganda. \n\n\n\nEighteen-year-old Aine Kamara has been anticipating a reunion with her older sister\, Mbabazi\, for months. But when Mbabazi shows up with an unexpected guest\, Aine must confront an old fear: her beloved sister is gay in a country with tight anti-homosexuality laws. \n\n\n\nGet Tickets! \n\n\n\nEverything Everywhere\n\n\n\nWith Emily Austin\, Matthew James Jones and Georgia Toews\, hosted by David Currie \n\n\n\nSunday\, May 4 – 8:30PM \n\n\n\nLearning to cope and thrive in a world seemingly hell-bent on disorienting\, distracting and destabilizing us\, provides the momentum behind three very different novels whose authors join us to talk fiction\, resilience and the many ways we struggle to find ourselves. \n\n\n\nWe Could Be Rats\,  the latest from Emily Austin\, the bestselling local author of Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead is the story of two very different sisters\, and a love letter to childhood\, growing up\, and the power of imagination. Sigrid hates working at the Dollar Pal. She did not graduate high school\, preferring to roam the streets of her small town with her best friend Greta. Her older sister Margit is baffled and frustrated by Sigrid’s inability to conform to the expectations of polite society. As Margit sets out to understand Sigrid and the secrets she has hidden\, both sisters\, in their own time and way\, discover that reigniting their shared childhood imagination is the only way forward. \n\n\n\nPredators\, Reapers\, and Deadlier Creatures  from poet\, novelist\, and veteran Matthew James Jones\, is the story of a drone operator stationed in Kandahar\, Afghanistan. As he monitors Sahar\, a teenager and suspected terrorist\, Jones commits the ultimate crime: he cares. In Kandahar\, there’s a monster in every window. And there’s also one in every mirror. \n\n\n\nNobody Asked for This by Georgia Toews is a razor-sharp dramedy following a twenty-something comic as she navigates family grief\, dysfunctional friendship\, and a date gone very wrong. In between working the rounds of Toronto’s small comedy club circuit and auditioning for paper towel commercials\, Virginia is tiptoeing around her depressed roommate and childhood friend\, Haley\, and having biweekly dinners with her bereaved stepdad\, Dale\, while trying to manage her own grief at the loss of her mother. \n\n\n\nGet Tickets!

SUMMARY:Casper Skulls at LIVE! on Elgin with Scrip Issue & Nick Bendzsa
DESCRIPTION:Casper Skulls have successfully grown into their own on their newest album Kit-Cat (Next Door Records\, April 11\, 2025)\, taking a refreshingly patient and collaborative approach to songwriting that ultimately left the Sudbury/Toronto\, Ontario band creating the best album of their career. \n\n\n\nScrip Issue are fans of post-punk\, no wave\, and noise rock\, creating new ideas to combine with those sounds. \n\n\n\nDark\, sensitive\, direct\, spiritual and tender; Bendzsa blends trap\, acoustic folk\, ambient\, and indie to texture and paint an exaggerated world of genuine experience and fantasy.

SUMMARY:Ottawa Regional Air Guitar Championships
DESCRIPTION:Get ready to rock out for goodness sake! Compete in the 2025 Ottawa Air Guitar Championships to win your way to the Canadian Air Guitar Championships in Toronto\, and potentially compete at the Air Guitar World Championships in Oulu\, Finland\, all while raising money for the Gord Downey & Chanie Wenjack Fund! You can sign up in advance to compete by providing your own 60-second track\, or come up out of the audience as one of our Brave Souls. Air guitar glory could be yours! Too shy for the stage? Not to worry – you’ll be blown away by how fun imaginary instruments can be! \n\n\n\nThe event is 19+ and unfortunately\, the venue is accessible as Targ is in a basement with a steep staircase with bathrooms too small to accommodate most wheelchairs. Masks are encouraged but not required\, and the event will feature loud noises and possible flashing lights akin to a rock show. \n\n\n\nAGC is a queer and trans-run organization that looks to give back to our communities through the power of music and joy. We actively work to make our events trans- and 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusive and as safe a space as we can. This includes actively looking to ensure that femmes\, non-binary people\, gender-non-conforming people\, and a wide array of weirdos and queerdos feel safe and seen enjoying music they love and connecting with community while we raise money for a great cause.

SUMMARY:Singles Mingle
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday May 4\, 2025 at Laugh Lounge in the Byward Market for the next Singles Mingle! Your hosts Natalia (sex educator & entrepreneur) and Joey (theatre & comedy queen) will guide you through interactive activities that allow you to get to know others in an easy\, comfortable and fun way. \n\n\n\nHaven’t been to a Singles Mingle before? It’s a special funnel style format – we start playing with the entire group and slowly get into smaller intimate groups as the night progresses. These activities are designed to help you let loose and laugh\, because humour helps to alleviate stress and makes interactions more enjoyable and relaxed. As a bonus\, you will also have the opportunity to win some amazing door prizes (including sex toys from Wicked Wanda’s)! \n\n\n\nWhen it comes to in-person dating events\, this is the best bang for your buck in our city. We pride ourselves on remaining affordable and ensuring that there are enough registrants to make your participation worth your precious time. We always attract between 60-80 people each time we host the Singles Mingle\, so you are guaranteed many people to meet! This matters because dating is a numbers game – the more people you get to interact with\, the closer you are to finding a real romantic connection. \n\n\n\nNo matter your culture\, sexual orientation\, gender or kinks\, you are welcome at the Singles Mingle. \n\n\n\nThe only criteria is that you are between the ages of 25 and 45 and you are currently single (not already in a romantic relationship) and ready to mingle! Feel free to reach out to the organizers with any questions or concerns you have\, it’s our priority to make you feel at ease 🙂 \n\n\n\n*** Doors open at 7:00 pm Mingling activities start at 7:30 pm Mingling activities ends at 9:30 pm Option to stay and continue mingling if you’re enjoying your conversations!
