Join us for our Beach Skills and Drills Program led by James Battiston\, former professional volleyball player and member of the Canadian Beach National Team. James has coached for several years with the Mavericks Volleyball Club as well as 15+ years at Madawaska Volleyball Camp.   \n\n\n\nWhether you’re new to beach volleyball or a seasoned player\, we have something for you!  Join us at the RA Centre on Saturday mornings where James will bring his expert guidance to teach you fundamentals or take you to the next level with specific skills.  \n\n\n\nThis session will include work on techniques for service\, blocking and defense in 2-on-2 beach volleyball. We will work on reading the first two contacts of an opponent to better set up a defense to counterattack. For this session\, participants are expected to have basic ball control (being able to forearm or hand pass a ball to a target) to allow for meaningful rallies.

DESCRIPTION:Beginning and emerging poets are invited to join facilitator Ben Ladouceur for a poetry workshop on the eve of Pride Month in Ottawa! \n\n\n\nBen will guide participants through writing prompts inspired by some of the best contemporary queer and ally poets. \n\n\n\nWhether you write poetry all the time or haven’t touched it for many years – if you want to explore and create poetry in a safe and productive space\, you will find this workshop worthwhile. You will walk away with three or four new poems in your notebook\, to continue working on at your own pace. \n\n\n\nParticipants will also be invited (if they want to) to take part in a reading in late August alongside authors Kimberly Quiogue Andrews\, Kevin Shaw and Sanita Fejzić (details to come). \n\n\n\nNote: The workshop is free but you need a library card (also free) to register. \n\n\n\nAbout Ben:Ben Ladouceur is an author living on the unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation (Ottawa). His first book\, Otter\, was selected as a best book of 2015 by the National Post\, nominated for a Lambda Literary Award\, and awarded the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award; his second book\, Mad Long Emotion\, was awarded the Archibald Lampman Prize. He is the recipient of the Writers’ Trust Dayne Ogilvie Prize for emerging LGBT+ writers\, and a National Magazine Award for Poetry. His short fiction has been featured in the Journey Prize Anthology and awarded the Thomas Morton Prize. His debut novel\, I Remember Lights\, was published by Book*hug Press in April 2025.

DESCRIPTION:We’re kicking off Pride month with an afternoon party at @TheGrove featuring @djdelpilar! Expect high-energy dance tracks and all your fave queers! \n\n\n\nTea dances were events organized on Sunday afternoons in the US gay community\, originating in New York in the 1950s and 1960s. The original dances included tea services rather than alcohol as it was illegal to serve alcohol to queer and trans people. To lower the chances of a police raid\, these dances were held on Sunday afternoons and served non-alcoholic drinks. \n\n\n\nGet fancy and dance with cuties! Tea dances were one of the only places where people could express themselves\, so we fully encourage outfits! \n\n\n\nHighlights \n\n\n\n\nThis event centers people who are queer and/or trans who take covid precautions in their everyday lives. Allies who take covid precautions are also welcome but please be mindful that this is primarily a space for queer and/or trans folks. We also welcome 2SLGBTQIA+ folks who are interested in a sober-friendly space and who will respect the covid-safer protocols of this event!\n\n\n\nMask mandatory event (KN95 or better). Masks are provided at the door and required before entry\n\n\n\nThis is a substance-free and sober-friendly event. Guests are welcome to consume before or after the event\, but please be mindful of intoxication levels.\n\n\n\nSliding scale tickets.\n\n\n\nThe canteen is open for non-alcoholic beverages. No other teams has given more opportunities to young Canadian players this season than Ottawa.
