SUMMARY:Unsafe: The Carceral Roots of the Anti-Trans Backlash
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an exciting public talk and workshop with Sarah Lamble\, Professor of Criminology and Queer Theory (Birkbeck College\, UCL) as they launch their book\, Unsafe: The Carceral Roots of the Anti-Trans Backlash\, newly published (currently 20% off) with Haymarket Books. \n\n\n\nSaturday 12 September3-5:30pmParlour RoomCarleton Dominion Chalmers Centre290 Lisgar Street\, Ottawa \n\n\n\nRegister through the link below! \n\n\n\nABOUT THE BOOKThe twenty-first century “gender wars” have been driven by a powerful and seductive narrative: that safety can be secured through exclusion\, surveillance\, and the policing of difference. These punitive logics have gained momentum across the political spectrum\, fueling an anti-trans backlash and distorting the meaning of safety itself. \n\n\n\nUnsafe is a clear-eyed and decisive challenge to the toxic ideas at the heart of this backlash. With patient rigour\, Lamble exposes how carceral approaches to safety fail to address root causes of harm\, ultimately deepening social divisions and legitimising new forms of violence and control. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE AUTHORLamble is a community organizer and Professor of Criminology and Queer Theory at Birkbeck\, University of London. Their work explores questions of gender\, sexuality\, and justice with a focus on feminist and abolitionist alternatives to prisons\, police\, and punishment. They are based in London. \n\n\n\nABOUT THE EVENT/ACCESSIBILITYThis event will also feature responses by local activists and intellectuals. Following the presentations there will be a Q&A\, followed by a light vegetarian meal with gluten free options. The event will be held in the Parlour Room of Dominion-Chalmers\, which is accessible by an elevator. Ramp access to the entrance of the building is available off the parking lot on Lisgar. Automated real-time captioning will be provided. \n\n\n\nSPONSORSThis event is hosted by the Department of Law and Legal Studies (Carleton University) and co-sponsored by the Institute of Feminist and Gender Studies (University of Ottawa)\, the Feminist Institute of Social Transformation (Carleton)\, the Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice (Carleton)\, the Ottawa Trans Library\, the Criminalization and Punishment Education Project (CPEP)\, and Octopus Books.

SUMMARY:Rising Through The Fray
DESCRIPTION:Courtney Montour\, Director / Jason Brennan\, Producer • 1 hour 28 minutes • 2025 • Canada • English with French Subtitles \n\n\n\nUniting from across continents to bring representation to the sport they love\, Indigenous Rising laces up their skates to claim their space on the roller derby track. \n\n\n\nIndigenous Rising is the first team in roller derby history to break the barriers of representing a single country at the Roller Derby World Cup – igniting a movement that pulsates throughout the sport and within each other. Rising Through the Fray follows the team as it welcomes a new generation of players determined to change the face of roller derby—an inclusive\, female-empowering sport still lacking diversity. \n\n\n\nWith a compassionate and candid lens\, filmmaker Courtney Montour weaves energetic on-track game play with tender moments in teammates’ daily lives as skaters from over 30 Indigenous Nations navigate and learn each other’s play styles at tournaments and find strength within each other to compete and skate onto the track with pride. \n\n\n\nIntimate portraits of teammates Sour Cherry\, Krispy and Hawaiian Blaze reveal stories of displacement and disconnection from their culture and identities and the journey of finding belonging within team Indigenous Rising. \n\n\n\nRising Through the Fray offers a poignant exploration of resiliency\, healing and reconnection of a roller derby family with a bond that goes beyond sport.

SUMMARY:Ancestral Threads - Shorts
DESCRIPTION:Honor of the Paintbrush\n\n\n\nLouise Thomas (Cree) • 8m • Canada • 2025 • English \n\n\n\nLouise\, an Anicinabe woman\, found the strength to move on after the loss of her husband by devoting herself to the art gallery she opened in his honour. Through this process\, she shows how healing can bring positivity and renewal. \n\n\n\nNivingajuliat\n\n\n\nShelby Lisk (Mohawk)\, Tess Girard • 12m • 2025 • Canada • English \n\n\n\nNivingajuliat (meaning ‘wall hanging’ in Inuktitut) follows artist Gayle Uyagaqi Kabloona as she works on her latest wall hanging\, depicting the story of the Inuit sea goddess\, Sedna. Coming from a legacy of renowned artists\, Kabloona responds to her great grandmother (Jessie Oonark) and grandmother’s (Victoria Mamnguqsualuk) artwork by continuing the tradition while making the narratives in a feminized context\, making the heroines in her artwork self-sufficient\, empowered women\, free of patriarchal violence. \n\n\n\nHandwoven\n\n\n\nDasha Levin (Mexican)\, Mason Cazalet\, Mihika Das\, Matthew Wisdom • Key Cast: Nikyle Begay (Diné) • 9m • USA • 2024 • English \n\n\n\nA lyrical portrait of Nikyle Begay\, a non-binary shepherd and weaver; working to preserve their way of life through the traditional art of weaving. \n\n\n\nFrost Scraping\n\n\n\nTheresa iskwêw (Nehiyaw) • 12m • 2025 • Canada • English \n\n\n\nThis short documentary follows Kanina Terry\, a hide tanner from Sioux Lookout\, whose family roots in hunting inspired her to ensure no hide goes to waste. Driven to learn the practice\, Kanina not only mastered tanning but also refined a winter frost-scraping method that has transformed her process and deepened her love for the craft. Beyond creating earrings\, calendars\, and other works with tanned hides\, she is part of a growing community revitalizing this ancestral skill. Kanina’s story reflects both innovation and tradition\, as she carries forward a practice that connects generations. \n\n\n\nInjalak\n\n\n\nJonathan Sequeira\, Wade Jackson • 10.5m • 2026 • Australia • English \n\n\n\nA remote town in Australia has a thriving community of indigenous artists. \n\n\n\nThreads of our Ancestors\n\n\n\nArtless Collective • 25m • 2026 • Canada • English \n\n\n\nThreads of our Ancestors explores the enduring spirit of Tłı̨chọ art through the hands and hearts of five remarkable artists from Canada’s Northwest Territories. Blending ancestral tradition with contemporary innovation\, this journey reveals how culture\, land\, and economic independence are intricately woven into everyday life.

SUMMARY:Savage Smudge - Late Night Shorts
DESCRIPTION:G.O.A.T\n\n\n\nKimberley Benjamin (Yawuru\, Bardi and Kija) • 11m • Australia • 2026 • English \n\n\n\nHilarious small-town hijinks ensue as a young queer Aboriginal woman\, Lilah\, falls head over heels for an apparently indifferent new colleague and puts her desire to the test\, sparking a chaotic\, heartfelt race to ask her to the NAIDOC Ball. \n\n\n\nTHE FIRST INDIGENOUS FEMALE PORNOGRAPHER\n\n\n\nJamie Whitecrow (Seine River First Nation) • Key Cast: Monique Mojica (Guna & Rappahannock) • 13m • 2025 • Canada • English \n\n\n\nTHE FIRST INDIGENOUS FEMALE PORNOGRAPHER is Audrey Little-breast\, a native woman whose life and work defies categorization. During a candid interview\, she unravels the mysterious settler desire and sexual appetite for “imaginary Indians” that guided her pornographic work in the 1970s and contemplates its impact on Indigenous sexuality. This film blends and bends archival footage\, pornography\, and re-enactments\, and invites us to ponder how deeply historical and contemporary settler-indigenous relations impact our sexuality. \n\n\n\nConvenience Store NDN Zombie\n\n\n\nCole Forrest (Anishinaabe) • 6.5m • USA • 2025 • English \n\n\n\nZoe and Benny are in love. Benny dies the night before Halloween and is reanimated as a zombie. Claire\, Zoe’s best friend has nefarious intentions. \n\n\n\nBeneath Our Skin\n\n\n\nNgaire Lyden-Elleray (Pasifika/Mi’kmaq/Tongan/Irish/English) • 15m 2025 • Canada • English \n\n\n\nMisi\, a young Indigenous woman\, is plagued by vivid dreams that draw her deeper into her family’s past and their connection to the land. While the city around her is closing in\, Misi must escape to find the cause behind her visions.  \n\n\n\nKakxop pahok: as crianças cegas\n\n\n\nCharles Bicalho (Brazilian) • Cassiano Maxakali (Maxakali) • 17.5m • 2025 • Brazil • Portuguese w/ Eng. Subtitles \n\n\n\nOne day all the men in the village went hunting. And days\, and weeks and months passed… And they didn’t come back. The women of the village then exchanged their children among themselves\, so as not to be left without husbands\, and began to live a new life. However\, one day the men returned from hunting. And they found themselves in a state of affairs very different from the one they had left.  \n\n\n\nSpoken in the Maxakali language and illustraded by the residents of Forest School Village (Aldeia Escola Floresta) in the mucicipality of Teófilo Otoni\, in Minas Gerais state\, in southeastern Brazil\, Kakxop pahok is based on a traditional story of the Maxakali (Tikmû’ûn) people. And forms the Hãmnõgnõy Trilogy of indigenous animations with Konãgxeka: the Maxakali Flood (2016) and Mãtãnãg\, the Enchanted (2019).
